The Paraguayan Flora and Fauna
Paraguay is parted into two zones relating to flora and fauna as well as to the climate. The north-western part, the “Gran Chaco” covers 61 % of the country, but only 4 % of the population lives there.
The Chaco is for the most part a sandy or loamy plain covered with shrub and palms. The climate there is mostly subtropical and often very dry with maximum temperatures up to 47° C in the shadow. South-east Paraguay in comparison is quite hilly and the climate is a little more moderate. This eastern part of the country is with 39 % of the Paraguayan territory the smaller part, but with its high population density the more populated one.
Flora and fauna make Paraguay a natural paradise and with good cause the country is called “the worlds garden”. Uncountable ornamental plants as for example different lilies and orchid types, jungle trees as the Lapacho, Quebrancho or the bottle tree and palm groves that stretch out to the horizon. Exotic fruit as banana, pineapple and many citrus fruits grow wildly or cultivated on plantations.
To emphasize there is also the wildlife. Hummingbirds, parrots, ostriches as well as armadillos, coatis, anteaters, pumas, tapirs, and jaguars. There can also be found reptiles as for example caimans, snakes and iguanas.
